February 2019 – Gathering Pace
We now have enough data to complete the rear axle/hub/suspension/wheel design. Early in the month work commenced on fabricating radius arms (by member Donald) and stiffened rear spring supports (by Patterson Engineering). A donation to the Skeoch fund by Dalbeattie Rotary gave us the liquidity to order some key parts, viz: wheel rims, tyres & tubes (4 off each from manufacturer’s dwindling stocks): and a 6” parking brake assembly from the USA. Sourcing the parking brake assembly and a further donation of bearings/locking collars by Galloway Industrial allowed the countershaft design to be finalised, and drawings plus EN16T bar-stock were sent to Alan Young Engineering for the manufacture of the countershaft. Serendipity struck again this month: we won a suitable bonnet mascot on ebay. Dave Dennison (of Model T Club) offered to donate an early Austin 7 front axle: and Keith Dickinson has found two almost complete contemporary carburettors – he is offering to donate one of them to the project.
Meanwhile back in the Shed the chassis was re-assembled after painting, rebuilding the engine and gearbox moved ahead under the expert guidance of Tom Parker, and Tim started colour 3D printing of parts for the 1/3rd scale model.
